Motorbikes

There are two types of motorcycle licences you can get. These include the Light Motorcycle Licence (A1) and the Standard Motorcycle Licence (A).

Light Motorcycle Licence (A1) - What you need to get your licence:

The Light Motorcycle Licence restricts riders to any bike up to 125cc and a power output of 11kW (14.6bhp). The practical test must be taken on a bike between 75cc and 125cc.

  • You must first have a Provisional licence with motorcycle entitlement, or a full car or moped licence. If you do not have any of these, then you need to apply for your provisional licence.
  • You must now take your Compulsory Basic Training (CBT), this however is not required if you have passed your moped test after the 1st of December 1990.
  • You can now ride on public roads with L-plates on a learner motorcycle (up to 125cc). You are not allowed to carry a pillion passenger.
  • You now need to take and pass your Motorcycle Theory Test. However, if you have a full moped licence, you only need to take this test if you obtained your licence before the 1st of July 1996.
  • You can now apply for your Motorcycle Practical Test.
  • You will take your test on a motorcycle between 75 and 125cc.

Pass

If you pass, you may discard your L-plates and carry a pillion passenger. You can now ride any motorcycle up to 125cc with a power output of up to 11kW (14.6Bhp).

Fail

If you fail, you will have to apply for your practical test again. You'll have to remember that your theory test pass and CBT certificate (DL196) have a life of two years.

Standard Motorcycle Licence (A) - The following tells you exactly what you need to do to get your licence:

The Standard Motorcycle Licence is obtained if the practical test is taken on a bike over 120cc but not more than 125cc and capable of at least 100Kph.

After passing the standard motorcycle practical test, you will be restricted for two years to riding a bike of up to 25kW (33Bhp). After this time period, you may ride any size of bike.

However, if you have a moped licence, you only need to take this test if you obtained your licence before the 1st of July 1996.
  • You can now apply for your Motorcycle Practical Test.
  • You will take your test on a motorcycle that is over 120cc, but not more than 125cc and capable of at least 100Kph.

Pass

If you pass, you may discard your L-plates, and carry a pillion passenger. You will be restricted to a motorcycle with a power output of up to 25kW (33bhp) for two years. After this period, you may ride any size of bike.

Direct/Accelerated Access - These are the steps you must follow if you plan on taking this course:

Direct Access: The practical test must be taken on a motorcycle with a power output of at least 35kW (46.6Bhp). A pass allows you to ride any size of bike.

Accelerated Access: Riders who reach the age of 21 while still within the two-year restriction period, and who wish to ride larger bikes, may practice on bikes over 25kW (33Bhp) in order to take the test allowing access to larger bikes. The same test and practice conditions for Direct Access riders will apply. Although you will revert to learner status while practising, and test failure will not affect your existing licence.

  • First of all you MUST be at least 21.
  • You must take your CBT if you have not already done so, this can be done either on a learner motorcycle (up to 125cc) or on a larger machine.
  • You may ride on public roads with L-plates on a learner motorcycle (up to 125cc) or on a larger bike only when accompanied by an approved instructor on another bike in radio contact.
  • You can now take your practical motorcycle test, this will be on a machine with a power output of at least 35kW (46.6bhp).

Pass

If you pass, you may discard your L-plates and ride any size of motorcycle.

Fail

If you fail, you will have to apply for your practical test again. You'll have to remember that your theory test pass and CBT certificate (DL196) have a life of two years.
